Hello Everyone,

Take a look at this behind-the-scenes video on the making of MEDITATE AND DESTROY!

This is our submission video for an amazing, radical, forward-thinking, killler film festival called From Here to Awesome.

We need your help immediately to help increase exposure for MEDITATE AND DESTROY and bring the film to cities across the U.S.

Here's how the From Here to Awesome film festival works.

This is not simply a film festival. It is a concerted effort to define the future of entertainment. There will be 10 winners who will get immediate distribution of their film in multiple platforms: theaters, mobile phones, living rooms, and the web. That means MEDITATE AND DESTROY will reach the goal of bringing the film DIRECTLY to YOU. Most film festivals do NOT offer extensive outreach directly to film fans. The concept here is very simple: the most popular films win!!

The problem we've discovered is that the system of distribution is an old model that doesn't work. Big media companies are the gatekeepers for literally thousands of filmmakers. While filmmaking is now democratized, film distribution is not. This situation needs to change.

We know MEDITATE AND DESTROY has a very large grassroots audience and we think EVERY single one of you should be able to see this film now.

<b>Please follow these simple steps to support M&D:

1). Watch the video.
http://www.fromheretoawesome.com/meditateanddestroy

2). Click on the link "NOTIFY ME OF SCREENINGS"

3). Comment, rate, and subscribe on Youtube and Myspace.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zyCgcbElFE

4). Take action. Spread the links to EVERYONE you think would be interested.</b>

If you've already seen the film, please still follow the instructions above so more people can be exposed. You will NOT be spammed by signing up on the From Here to Awesome website.

Thank you so much for helping the world find peace through the dharma!!

Love,

Sarah

I have started a tribe called "SF Bay Area Buddhism and Meditation". When wanting to post about NoCal-specific Buddhist events, I noticed that there was a gap beteen the "SF Yoga" tribe, on the one hand, and all the (location non-specific) Buddhism and meditation tribes on the other.

The blurb I wrote for the tribe description says, "A tribe for discussion of the deep Buddhist and meditation scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. Feel free to post or ask about a teacher or center, to announce upcoming events, to ask for rides and sitting partners, etc. Posting about Bay Area-specific topics of interest to Buddhist oriented people (i.e. things happening with Transpersonal Psychology, Hinduism and Taoism, yoga and martial arts, Eckhart Tolle and Rumi, that sort of thing) welcome also, but a main focus on Buddhism and on Buddhist practice is the intention. ¡Vive le Buddhisme et le trésor triple!"

I invite anyone who lives or spends time in Northern California and with an interest in The Buddha Way to join this new tribe. It's public, so you can just sign yerself right up - http://tribes.tribe.net/sfbaybuddhism
7:00 pm

Join us for an extraordinary night of meditation, lecture and discussion with Noah Levine, author of Dharma Punx. The Buddha’s teachining of wisdom and compassion go “against the stream” of ordinary consciousness and cultural norms. Spiritual awakening is a process of internal and external rebellion against greed, hatred and delusion. This meditation and lecture will consist of the buddhist meditative path and examine the necessity of being engaged in creating positive change in the world.

I’m so pleased to find that there is a tribe dedicated to Noah’s book and his vision. I’d like to introduce myself and propose an idea.

About Me:
I grew up in Santa Cruz and was a part of the exhilarating and self-destructive world that Noah describes so vividly in Dharma Punx. Noah was a sometimes cohort of mine in the old days. I lost touch with him and most of my friends when I retreated from the street punk scene in the late 80’s.

I found out about Dharma Punx about a year ago when Noah held a benefit for Meditate and Destroy at my club in SF. I was interested in reading his book since I had been a practicing Buddhist for about a year at that point and a former Santa Cruz gutter punk but I could not bring myself to face the past in such detail. I finally found the courage to read the book a couple of weeks ago. At first, I was devastated to find out how many of the people I grew up with had died. Ultimately, I feel liberated and inspired by Noah’s work.

These days I am an artist, a night club owner, and the host of Yoga Mob. Yoga Mob is a donation only yoga community center located in the 4000 sq ft. live/work warehouse where I live. To learn more about Yoga Mob, you can visit the Yoga Mob tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/yogamob , the Yoga Mob website http://www.icasserole.com/yogamob/ , or read the article about it in the Guardian http://www.sfbg.com/40/20/x_biznews.html

The Idea:
Yoga Mob has been a huge success. What I would like to propose is to expand the idea into a new project called Dharma Mob. To start, I’d like to offer daily morning meditation. It would be informal; held the Yoga Mob space on the corner of Cesar Chavez and Mission and run 30 to 45 minutes. I practice Zen meditation but the style would be entirely up to the sitter. I'm thinking doors at 8AM? Is that too late for folks with day jobs? Too early for folks with night jobs? We'd have to be quiet since my five other housemates will be sleeping which means no pre-meditation chanting or guidance meditations.

I’ve noticed that tribe’s activity has slowed to a trickle these day but please chime in with your interest level so I can gauge if this is a thing to do or not. Thank you all in advance for your participation and I look forward to hearing your ideas regarding the possibility of Dharma Mob.

Meditation alters brain patterns in ways that are likely permanent,
scientists have known. But a new study shows key parts of the brain actually
get thicker through the practice.

Brain imaging of regular working folks who meditate regularly revealed
increased thickness in cortical regions related to sensory, auditory and
visual perception, as well as internal perception -- the automatic
monitoring of heart rate or breathing, for example.

The study also indicates that regular meditation may slow age-related
thinning of the frontal cortex.

"What is most fascinating to me is the suggestion that meditation practice
can change anyone's gray matter," said study team member Jeremy Gray, an
assistant professor of psychology at Yale. "The study participants were
people with jobs and families. They just meditated on average 40 minutes
each day, you don't have to be a monk."

The research was led by Sara Lazar, assistant in psychology at Massachusetts
General Hospital. It is detailed in the November issue of the journal
NeuroReport.

The study involved a small number of people, just 20. All had extensive
training in Buddhist Insight meditation. But the researchers say the results
are significant.

Most of the brain regions identified to be changed through meditation were
found in the right hemisphere, which is essential for sustaining attention.
And attention is the focus of the meditation.

Other forms of yoga and meditation likely have a similar impact on brain
structure, the researchers speculate, but each tradition probably has a
slightly different pattern of cortical thickening based on the specific
mental exercises involved.
Just wanted to alert everyone about the in-progress documentary on meditation teacher and author of Dharma Punx, Noah Levine. MEDITATE AND DESTROY is a film about punk rock, spirituality, and inner rebellion. The film will take an up-close look at how one individual, Noah Levine, made a courageous journey from the depths of alcohol and drug addiction to a path of community service and interconnectedness.

Take a look at our brand **NEW** updated film trailer at:

www.digitalrites.com/meditat...ailer2.html

For more info visit our website: www.meditateanddestroy.com

The shooting phase of this exciting production is almost complete! Our projected release date is in late 2006. We are in the process of raising financial contributions to take this film to it's final completion. Monies raised will go towards post-production costs (editing, sound mixing, music rights, etc.)

If you would like to support this project (or know anyone who can make a significant contribution $$), please see info below. We are looking for BOTH investors and angel donors. ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE!!!

Here's how you can become a Patron Rebel Saint of Sacred Cinema:

1). Donate $$. What? Are you saving that last $20 for more non-tax deductible lattes??

2). Make wealth matter. C'mon, no excuses here....we all know 1 wealthy person by a degree or two of separation. Let's talk about how to give at least ONE person you know an enticing pitch on why donating to MEDITATE AND DESTROY will reap benefits galore: a). for instance, kids will have more to talk about than that darn American Idol b). Modern Drunkard magazine will sell fewer copies-- and stop damaging trees and brain cells by vice of their nonsensical verbiage!

3). Get creative: Throw a fundraising party, hold a bake sale, sell some art, auction off a date with your best friend.

4). Create Buzz. Forward our website link to 5 friends who you feel would be interested and would truly benefit from knowing about this film!!

5). Sell Your Blood. Just when you thought you had nothing to give...you do! This one is for all you daredevils who really believe this will be a bloody brilliant film.

The direct benefits of donating are:

*Great future karma (giving the priceless jewel of dharma is precious and rare)
*Your name in the credits (no matter what amount $$ you give)
*FREE STUFF (the kind that matters)...If you donate over $500, you will (of course) be admitted FREE to the film premiere and given a DVD + soundtrack + receive accolades of praise + BENEFITS such as:
a). contributing to the digital revolution; ruining the system of hierarchy between Hollywood vs. Indie Filmmaking
b). supporting a Female filmmaker (encouraging film biz Yin and Yang)
c). As a Happy-go-lucky Investor you will receive the fully-endowed list titled, WIIFM ("What's In It For Me?")

This is a film about the "power of one". I'm a firm believer that one individual can be a shining light-- shaping society by their presence and the intention that gives force to their life. Noah is a stellar example of a phoenix rising from the ashes. In the bleakness of NYC, every single day Noah helps people give meaning to their lives.

Thanks for your interest and support! Please e-mail your questions to: meditate_and_destroy@earthlink.net
With peace and blessings to all.
1) I am so excited to be engaging in great discussions, learning, meeting new people, growing, laughing, having a place to express myself
2) I am "wasting" a lot of time, staying up too late, hurting my body and arms, getting into debates, misunderstandings, getting triggered and generally feeling more of a tease than real satisfaction. My intention in joining tribe was not to flare up my RSI (an issue I know too much about and wrote my thesis partly on) but to meet new people to talk with in the real world! The internet is great for something but honestly, it sucks for chat except to communicate at least somewhat with people far away.

Don't wait till you are sitting on your seat or till you go to your temple or place of worship; immediately recite manis. And then dedicate the merits for the enlightenment of all beings and the relief of all suffering."

I was really dissapointed that I was unable to say fuck it about work and just go. My overwhelming sense of responsibility got the better of me in the end but happily I made it to the free lecture at CIIS Friday. Did anyone make it to that? Or the the fundraiser?
I think Noah's talk at the last sangha was cool. There is something I wanted to say. I think that we, us disenfranchised yet compassionate rebels, really NEED one another. There's WAY too many of THEM and so few of us that some support in this life by kindred souls would be welcome. (I'm being a bit flippant in using such dualistic terms here, I know!)
Sangha is one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism. So the question I pose... How do we build a strong community?

This was just posted in the Madame Gonzaga tribe and I thought that since you all are my Sangha mates, you might enjoy this.

I've been going through some SERIOUS bardo difficulties, but I'm taking time to remember my training and reflect on life.

I just had to remember this story that was told to me back when I was still just a puppy on the spiritual path!
++++++++++++

The Fish and the Water

One day there was a school of young fish swimming in the ocean. as they were pleasantly swimming along when a crazy old fish came swimming up to them screaming at the top of his gills:

"the WATER! the WATER! Ohhhhhh, the WATER!"

The little fish were more then a little apprehensive but they stayed. The crazy old fish continued.

"Don't you see? Without the water we will all suffocate and die a horrible death! We will dry up and die an agonizing death! The WATER! the WATER! Oooooooohhhhhhh, the WATER!!"

The crazy fish swirled away from the school of young fish in an erratic fashion, still moaning and still going on to no one about the water. The young fish looked at each other for a moment and shuddered a bit, but moved on. They discussed it a little. Most of them wondering exactly WHAT this water thing was that the crazy old fish was going on about. Some of them had vague ideas of what it was, but none were cirtain. The subject was dropped and eventually forgotten.

But one little fish was still disturbed. He wondered about the water. At some point this notion seized him and he started to worry. Worry became fear. Fear became terror. Overwhelmed in his solitary panic, the little fish separated from the school to rush back to the grotto that was his home. When he got home, he swam into the rocks and back to hole that was his home. There, he huddled into a dark corner and cried in his anguish. Alone.

Some time later, the mother fish came home. She saw her little son crying in the corner. She swam up to him and asked him was was wrong. He wept.

"We were swimming along and a crazy old fish came up to us and he told us that without the water we will dry up and we will suffocate and we will die a horrible and painful death and I don't wanna die not that way and why so we have to die? why do we need to suffer? why is the water going away? why why why...."

The little fish's mother slowly approched her son and gently pulled him to her side. She held him under her fin and with the other fin stroked his worried head. She spoke.

"Sweetie, you are worrying about something that you don't have to worry about. Don't you know what water is?"

The little fish paused, and realized he did not. He never really saw water. He just had a vague idea of what it was.

"Water is all around us. It is within us. Most of what we are made of is water. It is everywhere we go. It is what we live in. It's what we live in."

The little fish was calmed under the kind counsel of his mother. The little fish felt the current of water rushing in and out of his little gills. He started to feel it on his scales. He had never really noticed before. He started to understand that water is everywhere around him, and indeed, within him.
++++++++++

The reason this story is told to Sufi's is to illustrate the phenomenon that is LOVE. What water is to fish, Love is to the human being.

It is the electromagnetic meliu in which we live. Yes, without it we will suffocate and die, but there is no need to worry. It surrounds us. It is all around us. It is within us. It is what we are made of. It is everywhere we go. We are never without it.

We live in it.

((^_^))

I am so happy to connect with this Sangha! It was a wonderful experience last wednesday evening. I was so happy to see everyone in this space of openness and meditation. I'm so greatful to my "Rumimate" Katherine for telling me about this and to Polly for coming with me. I was particularly happy to reConnect with Vinny. We know each other from a different context and a different time. So wonderful that he's doing a great job leading this Sangha.

I also want to express my comfort with this Sangha. I do my Buddhist practice with People Of Color Sanghas. I also do my Jummuah (Islamic congregation) at an African American mosque and I do Masjlez (Sufi congregation) with Persians.

Given my history and struggles in our racist culture, where insensitive remarks are frequently made with no regard for the feelings of other folks (EVEN in spiritual gatherings) I have had to seek spaces where I feel safe and at ease. I have formerly only felt secure enough to find that meditive state amongst other people of color. In my young ghetto days I was a member of the 5% Nation and the Nation of Islam. While both groups have taught me many valuable things, both groups do not allow white people to participate. Having had that background, its understandable that I would feel distrusting and uneasy around occidentals.

Now, however, I am happy to say that I felt completely at ease and welcome in the Urban Dharma Sangha. I can feel the sincere search of the people there. I sense no ill will in this setting. I sense that everyone in this Sangha is striving for insight and enlightenment. I sense that I am welcome here. I sense that I am safe here.

Perhaps its my maturity. Perhaps its just that I've reached that phase in my spiritual growth. Perhaps its the atmosphere Noah, Vinny, and all the other Sangha brothers and sisters have created. Perhaps its just that I am now ready to crack open to any and all, but whatever the case, this is illuminating and powerful for me.

My deep gratitude to each of you.

Tonight was like a gut punch to the soul. But for a good reason. One of the reasons I love Vinnie's role in Urban Dharma is the unconventional way he leads the discussions. So much boiled to the surface tonight, that came up completely unexpected. Feeling impotent when someone you care about is in pain or in danger of losing their facilities has got to be one of the most frustrating experiences in life.

But I've come the opinion that every difficulty that arise in life offers opportunities for growth, expansion and alternate viewpoints.

Yeah, sometimes the comfort that we try to offer each other sounds like empty words. But I've also learned that every time I lend a hand to a friend and maybe use a tired cliche, it really does apply. And maybe it waits until the acute pain has subsided before it actually makes sense.

I sincerely wish for the best for Mikey, whatever that happens to be. I heard a couple of people comment on his optimism. Maybe this will work towards his advantage. He has the potential to be an even more shining example of that positivity.

Showdown at Crawford Gulch, an original fable about lies, greed, and dirty double-crossing in a dusty old Texas town where the Good go bad, the Bad ain't pretty, and the Ugly get uglier. Tumbleweeds fly as peace-loving citizens of 1886 Crawford Gulch, Texas, face perpetual war with the neighboring Comanche, and townfolk fight to protect their liberties as they are whupped into a frenzy of fear over reported Arrows of Mass Destruction.

should be fun. come on down, y'hear?

we can choose to hide behind our fears and not let light shine through us. perhaps this light is the way of the buddha, a lightness of being, the true nature of our spirit. in not letting our inner buddha shine we can keep ourselves in darkness but we also are withholding that light from the rest of the world. every person we interact with is touched by our light, we affect each soul we interact with daily.

i try to think of this when i've had a bad day or feeling low and i'm getting ready to see someone or speak to a student of mine. it's my purpose to let the light shine through, so i take a deep breath and let go of my blocks.

I am fairly new to the Urban Dharma group (about 5 meetings so far), but want to say how valuable it has been for me in terms of my meditation/spiritual practice and getting a better understanding of how to carry it into every day life.

I also want to say how much I enjoyed Vinny's participation last night and how moved I was by the sharing that took place at the end of the group. Thanks Noah for inviting Vinny to lead last night!

I had a chance to talk briefly with Vinny after the group, and he told me a little about the youth group he works with. My own recent professional background involves a lot of youth development, so I empathized greatly with the passion and intentionality he brings to his work.

I found out that there is a very simple way to support his organization: next time you buy anything on Amazon.com, access Amazon through http://www.challengeday.org/books.html
If you enter the Amazon site through this link, a portion of your purchases will be donated to Challenge Day. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I also had a chance to check out Noah's Mind, Body, Awareness Project web site, and I got to say that MBAP's work rocks as well!! I look forward to supporting it in the future.
or deflecting it. Take time to be fully present when you catch yourself (be the silent witness) worrying or trying to avoid something you fear may occur. Act in a way that does not "honor" that and chanel your energies into a positive action rather than one of aversion.

The week of 4/7/04
well well welll, I saw so many of your faces last week! So nice to come to our weekly group and just see so many familiar faces and so many new ones! This means a lot of you are spreading the word and our group is pretty well known. YEAH! So the last days of Noah teaching our class is approaching, and well it's kind of sad...I know from my own personal experience, he makes me want to come, he makes such a fun group and great teachings..and well he will be hard to replace and well I guess he can't be replaced..but hey we all got to move on and do something new...!! right? Well, we have a great community and a great group and I really would like to see everyone come out in the next few weeks, just to meditate and say good bye. Well, I am going to end this run on sentence email with a little info on Loving/Kindness Meditation, this is something that I have to do everyday, and the past few days I have been doing it for myself which is something new..so check it out and try it..if you don't already!!

So see you all on Wednesday around 7:30ish on 3rd and Fulton!

Warm and loving thoughts for all of you,

-Jaime

All living beings deserve to be cherished because of the tremendous kindness they have shown us. All our temporary and ultimate happiness arises through their kindness. Even our body is the result of the kindness of others. We did not bring it with us from our previous life - it developed from the union of our father's sperm and mother's ovum. Once we had been conceived our mother kindly allowed us to stay in her womb, nourishing our body with her blood and warmth, putting up with great discomfort, and finally going through the painful ordeal of childbirth for our sake. We came into this world naked and empty-handed and were immediately given a home, food, clothes, and everything else we needed. While we were a helpless baby our mother protected us from danger, fed us, cleaned us, and loved us. Without her kindness we would not be alive today. Through receiving a constant supply of food, drink, and care, our body gradually grew from that of a tiny helpless baby to the body we have now. All this nourishment was directly or indirectly provided by countless living beings. Every cell of our body is therefore the result of others' kindness. Even those who have never known their mother have received nourishment and loving care from other people. The mere fact that we are alive today is a testimony to the great kindness of others. It is because we have this present body with human faculties that we are able to enjoy all the pleasures and opportunities of human life. Even simple pleasures such as going for a walk or watching a beautiful sunset can be seen to be a result of the kindness of innumerable living beings. Our skills and abilities all come from the kindness of others; we had to be taught how to eat, how to walk, how to talk, and how to read and write. Even the language we speak is not our own invention but the product of many generations. Without it we could not communicate with others nor share their ideas. We could not read this book, learn Dharma, nor even think clearly. All the facilities we take for granted, such as houses, cars, roads, shops, schools, hospitals, and cinemas, are produced solely through others' kindness. When we travel by bus or car we take the roads for granted, but many people worked very hard to build them and make them safe for us to use. The fact that some of the people who help us may have no intention of doing so is irrelevant. We receive benefit from their actions, so from our point of view this is a kindness. Rather than focusing on their motivation, which in any case we do not know, we should focus on the practical benefit we receive. Everyone who contributes in any way towards our happiness and well-being is deserving of our gratitude and respect. If we had to give back everything that others have given us, we would have nothing left at all. We might argue that we are not given things freely but have to work for them. When we go shopping we have to pay, and when we eat in a restaurant we have to pay. We may have the use of a car, but we had to buy the car, and now we have to pay for petrol, tax, and insurance. No one gives us anything for free. But from where do we get this money? It is true that generally we have to work for our money, but it is others who employ us or buy our goods, and so indirectly it is they who provide us with money. Moreover, the reason we are able to do a particular job is that we have received the necessary training or education from other people. Wherever we look, we find only the kindness of others. We are all interconnected in a web of kindness from which it is impossible to separate ourselves. Everything we have and everything we enjoy, including our very life, is due to the kindness of others. In fact, every happiness there is in the world arises as a result of others' kindness. Our spiritual development and the pure happiness of full enlightenment also depend upon the kindness of living beings. Buddhist centers, Dharma books, and meditation courses do not arise out of thin air but are the result of the hard work and dedication of many people. Our opportunity to read, contemplate, and meditate on Buddha's teachings depends entirely upon the kindness of others. Moreover, as explained later, without living beings to give to, to test our patience, or to develop compassion for, we could never develop the virtuous qualities needed to attain enlightenment. In short, we need others for our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Without others we are nothing. Our sense that we are an island, an independent, self-sufficient individual, bears no relation to reality. It is closer to the truth to picture ourselves as a cell in the vast body of life, distinct yet intimately bound up with all living beings. We cannot exist without others, and they in turn are affected by everything we do. The idea that it is possible to secure our own welfare whilst neglecting that of others, or even at the expense of others, is completely unrealistic.

It's all good. I know I'll get there. I actually did some yoga and meditation in my room this morning, to balance out the sleep dep. Which means I got some meditation in, just not the group.
